Prescription Shortage Planner — Complete Guide

Learn how to compare pharmacy options during medicine shortages so you can collect your prescription with the least cost, travel, and disruption.

📅 Last updated: 2025-06-01

Quick Tips

Jump-start your understanding with these essential tips

Shortages are unpredictable. Comparing two or more pharmacies gives you a clear picture of which option saves the most time and money, rather than relying on just one.

Enter your home postcode and each pharmacy postcode. The tool calculates distance, travel time, and travel cost automatically — much more accurate than guessing.

The planner ranks options based on your inputs, but pharmacy stock changes daily. Always call ahead to confirm the medicine is available before making the trip.

If you need the medicine today, switch on "Same-day need" to prioritise nearby pharmacies over cheaper distant ones. The ranking changes to minimise travel time.

Mark pharmacies as private if they charge above the NHS rate. The tool adds a disruption penalty for private prescriptions so you can see the true cost difference.

Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these steps to get the most from this tool

Type your medication name and quantity so you know exactly what you are looking for. Enter your home postcode and click "Lookup" — this sets your location for distance calculations to each pharmacy.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • Include the dosage and form (e.g. "Amoxicillin 500mg capsules") so you can tell pharmacies exactly what you need.
  • The postcode lookup uses Postcodes.io — a free, open UK postcodes service.

For each pharmacy you are considering, enter its name and postcode. The tool looks up the location and calculates the distance, estimated travel time, and travel cost from your home. Set whether the pharmacy has the medicine in stock, whether it is an NHS or private prescription, and adjust the cost if needed.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • The default cost of £9.90 is the current NHS prescription charge in England. Change it for private prescriptions or if you are exempt.
  • If you do not know the pharmacy postcode, check the NHS Find a Pharmacy website.

The tool ranks all in-stock pharmacies by total pathway cost — combining prescription cost, travel cost, and a time-burden cost. The top option is marked "Optimal". Each pathway shows a disruption score (0–10) so you can see how practical it is, not just how cheap.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • Click "View Action Steps" on any pathway to see a step-by-step plan for collecting from that pharmacy.
  • Switch to Map View to see relative distances at a glance.

Contact your top-ranked pharmacy to confirm stock, then follow the action steps. If your first choice is unavailable, you already have a ranked backup list. Re-run the tool if your situation changes — for example, if a closer pharmacy restocks.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • If all pharmacies are out of stock, call NHS 111 or speak to your GP about alternatives.
  • For ongoing shortages, ask your GP whether a different formulation or brand is available.

Deep dives for advanced users

The disruption score runs from 0 (no disruption) to 10 (very disruptive). It adds points for long travel time (up to 3 points), high travel cost (up to 2 points), private prescriptions (+2 points), and urgent long-distance trips (+2 points). The score helps you compare options that look similar on cost but differ in practical effort.

Total pathway cost = prescription cost + travel cost + time burden cost. Time burden is calculated at 25p per minute of travel, tripled when "Same-day need" is on. This means a 30-minute trip adds £7.50 normally or £22.50 in urgent mode — reflecting the real inconvenience of rushing across town for a same-day collection.

In normal mode, options are sorted by total pathway cost, with disruption score as a tiebreaker. In same-day mode, travel time takes priority — if two options differ by more than 10 minutes, the faster one ranks higher regardless of cost. This ensures urgent needs are met quickly without being misled by a slightly cheaper but much further pharmacy.
